FAQs
What is Green Wave Esports?
Green Wave Esports is Summerville High School’s official esports team. We are a competitive gaming program where students can develop their skills, teamwork, and strategic thinking while representing our school in various online tournaments and leagues.
I’ve heard of video games, but how are esports different?
Esports, short for electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games. It involves organized, multiplayer video game competitions, often between professional players or teams. Esports athletes train and compete in popular games like League of Legends, Overwatch, and Rocket League, just like traditional athletes do in physical sports.
What are the current competitive games for Green Wave Esports?
Green Wave Esports currently competes in the following games:
Brawlhalla
Chess
Mario Kart
Minecraft
Overwatch 2
Rocket League
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Valorant
Check out our Competitive Teams for more information. We participate in the High School Esports League and support as many teams as we’re able from the games they offer.
Who is eligible to join Green Wave Esports?
We welcome all Summerville High School students who have a passion for gaming and are committed to teamwork. Our eligibility requirements include:
- Maintain at least a 70 in every class
- No suspensions or major referrals
- Regularly attend all classes and turn in excuses promptly
- Follow the Code of Conduct
What are the advantages of being part of Green Wave Esports?
Green Wave Esports is more than just competitive gaming – it’s a place where students can connect with like-minded peers who share their passion for video games. Our students make lasting friendships and feel a sense of belonging in a supportive community. They also get to have fun while learning and practicing soft skills that will benefit them throughout their academic and professional career.
Teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and time management are just a few of the skills that our players learn to be successful at a high level of competition.
How do you support my student’s academic success?
Green Wave Esports is committed to fostering both academic excellence and competitive gaming success. We understand the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between the two, so we actively monitor our players’ academic progress through regular grade checks and open communication with students and teachers.
We believe that a passion for esports can fuel motivation in the classroom. By encouraging students to seek help when needed and fostering a supportive environment, we ensure that every Green Wave Esports member has the resources they need to thrive academically. We’re confident that our team members’ dedication to esports can actually enhance their overall academic experience.
What kind of time commitment is required?
Participating in Green Wave Esports can be a significant time commitment, but we believe it’s also an invaluable opportunity to develop essential life skills. Through esports, students learn to manage their time effectively, prioritize tasks, and maintain a healthy balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and personal time.
The time commitment varies depending on the specific game and level of competition, but here’s a general overview:
- Practices: Teams usually practice once or twice a week for two hours each session.
- Matches: Matches are held weekly, and an hour is scheduled during the regular season.
- Season: Our Fall and Spring seasons run for six weeks with a two-week preseason and three weeks for playoffs. During this time, players are expected to participate in every practice and match for their game.
Are there any costs or fees associated with joining Green Wave Esports?
Green Wave Esports strives to make participation accessible to all students, regardless of their financial background. In order to keep costs as low as possible, we require students to participate in fundraising initiatives throughout the year. These range from contacting local businesses about sponsorships to volunteering at local events. Students are responsible for $100 in fundraising each year which goes to cover team expenses such as jerseys, entry fees, and equipment maintenance.
While the school provides gaming equipment, some students prefer to purchase their own peripherals for optimal performance. This is not required, and the school is committed to providing the best possible equipment within reason. We regularly apply for grants to make sure the arena has all the equipment necessary for our teams to be successful.
