Who We Are
The Green Wave Esports team at Summerville High School isn’t just about playing games – it’s about building a community where everyone belongs. With over 100 students strong, we embrace players of all skill levels and provide a supportive space to discover the thrill of esports.
Our Mission: The Green Wave Esports team provides a supportive community for all students, cultivating a passion for gaming, teamwork, and personal growth while striving for competitive success.
We compete nationally against other high school teams in popular esports titles like Smash Bros, Overwatch 2, Brawlhalla, Rocket League, and Valorant. Our commitment to esports extends beyond the players themselves; we also have a dedicated student-led marketing and production team that promotes our events and elevates our competitive spirit. To share the excitement, we stream most games on Twitch, complete with live student commentary, adding another thrilling layer to our program.

Our esports journey began as a casual gaming club, providing a lunchtime space for students to connect over shared interests. We organized local tournaments, but it wasn’t until last year that we took the leap into competitive esports. Thanks to the BEST Teacher Grant, we secured the equipment needed to launch our club. Our grassroots initiative caught the attention of district CTE Director, Dr. Greg Harrison, who shared our vision for supporting students who might not usually participate in after-school activities. With his support, we’ve established esports arenas in all three district high schools, fueling the rapid growth of our program.
Our Coaches & Officers

complexities of school administration, coordinate with other schools, and schedule our thrilling matches. As the ultimate problem solver, they ensure smooth sailing for the entire team.
David Griggs, a math teacher with a passion for statistics, computer science, and gaming, leads Green Wave Esports as Head Coach. His love for esports began in childhood with games like Zelda and Pokemon, and he has a history of high-level competition in titles like Call of Duty, League of Legends, and World of Warcraft. Griggs’s experience as a streamer and leader in online communities brings a unique perspective to his coaching. When not strategizing for Green Wave, he can be found on the disc golf course or pickleball court, channeling the same competitive spirit he cultivates in his team.
