Building a Legacy Vol. 4: Summerville High School

There’s a new kid on the block: Summerville High School. Hailing from Summerville, South Carolina, the Green Wave is proving that they have what it takes to be in the conversation of “best in the nation”. Fall 2023 saw Summerville have their most successful season by far in the High School Esports League since joining at the end of 2022.

How successful, you may ask? The Summerville Green Wave are 1 of only 4 schools that have a presence in all three Premier titles, earning their spot through either Fall season performance (they were1st place in the Fall East Region for Brawlhalla) or the spring open qualifiers for Rocket League and VALORANT. As many of us may know, just getting your program off the ground comes with its fair share of obstacles, so I reached out to head Coach David Griggs to get more background and insight on what has helped the Green Wave make such a massive splash in the High School Esports League.

Dorchester School District Two Celebrates Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for eSports Competition Lab

Dorchester School District Two students, teachers, and administrators celebrated the opening of the eSports Competition Lab at Summerville High School on October 28th.

DDTwo’s Career and Technology Education department has launched the first eSports academic program locally in the Lowcountry. Summerville is the first DDTwo high school to open a lab, and Ashley Ridge High School and Fort Dorchester High School will follow. The labs develop students’ digital expertise through structured learning around gaming, competing, announcing, recording, and producing.

Dorchester School District Two opens eSports Competiton Lab at high school

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Dorchester School District Two celebrated the opening of the eSports Competition Lab at Summerville High School on Saturday.

The district’s Career and Technology Education department launched the first eSports academic program in the Lowcountry, with Summerville being the first high school in the district to open a lab, district’s spokesman Matthew Kenwright says.

By learning around gaming, competing, announcing, recording and producing, the labs will develop the students’ digital knowledge, Kenwright says.

“We have all sorts of students. We find a safe space where they interact with each other and learn how to grow and play together — all the soft skills that employers are always talking about wanting — that’s what we provide,” Coach David Griggs says.

Dorchester School District Two celebrates eSports Lab in Summerville

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Dorchester School District Two celebrated the opening of their new eSports competition lab at Summerville High School on Saturday, Oct. 28.

With the gaming industry reaching nearly $160 billion in revenue and colleges awarding millions in scholarships for eSports, DD2 wants its students to have an advantage as they head into their next chapter after graduation.

“Adding eSports to our high-quality academics is an ideal opportunity,” said Executive Director of Student Programs Dr. Greg Harrison. “We’re preparing students for lucrative careers and engaging them through their passion for interactive technology.”

A winning strategy for gaming and life: DD2 starts Lowcountry’s first esports programs

SUMMERVILLE — It’s all fun and games in Dorchester District Two.

After school lets out, students are seated in a brand-new lab at Summerville High School. It’s boisterous, full of laughter as four students play Super Smash Bros. against each other. It’s a little more serious and quieter behind them, where a team of five is competing in a “Valorant” tournament against a team in New Jersey, with a student and alum offering commentary as the game is streamed.
